The Role
We're seeking a Fractional Finance Leader (SVP/CFO caliber) to establish financial discipline, own core finance operations, and prepare us for a Seed/Series A raise in either Q4'2025 or Q1'2026. You'll be hands-on; building the model, running a clean close, enforcing spend discipline, and giving leadership a fact-based view of the business. This role begins as contract (10-20 hrs/month) but has the potential to grow into a full-time leadership position as we scale.
90-Day Outcomes
- Books Clean & Timely: Monthly close within 5 business days; reconciliations fully current.
- Runway Clarity: 13-week cash view and 24-month scenario model; weekly burn/range updates.
- Budget Discipline: Function-level budgets with variance reporting and accountable owners.
- Spend Governance: Lightweight approval process, vendor and card policy enforced, weekly waste flagged.
- Reporting Rhythm: Board-ready finance pack (P&L, cash, KPIs) and one-page executive dashboard.
Responsibilities
Accounting & Close
- Own Quickbooks chart of accounts, accrual entries, AR/AP hygiene, and reconciliations.
- Manage monthly close; prepare deliverables for CPA, 1099s, and coordinate annual filings.
FP&A & Cash
- Build and maintain a driver-based model (revenue scenarios, hiring plan, CAC/Payback).
- Deliver 13-week cash flow, runway tracking, and "what-if" scenario analysis.
Budgeting & Controls
- Stand up zero-based/driver budgets by function; monthly variance reporting and corrective actions.
- Implement spend policy and lightweight approvals; track vendor ROI.
Systems & Process
- Optimize existing finance stack; Google Docs, Brew, QuickBooks, Rippling, Gust.
- Document processes; create a close calendar and finance ops playbook.
Fundraising & Governance
- Support SAFE/convertible modeling, cap table hygiene (Gust), data room prep, board materials cadence.
- Oversee compliance watchlist (state registrations, sales/use tax risk assessment with CPA).
What You've Done (Must-Haves)
- 7-10+ years in startup finance leadership (Controller, CFO, or fractional), ideally pre-seed > Series A SaaS.
- Strong GAAP knowledge; QuickBooks-fluent; advanced Google Sheets/Excel modeling (INDEX/MATCH/XLOOKUP, scenario controls).
- Built both 13-week cash flow and 24-month models from scratch.
- Owned monthly close ≤5 business days.
- Implemented or optimized finance stacks (QuickBooks, Rippling, Gust, and related tools).
- Comfortable turning messy transactions into clean dashboards and actionable insights.
Nice-to-Haves
- Experience with performance-based pricing and vendor consolidation programs.
- Familiarity with SaaS metrics frameworks (MRR/ARR, Gross Margin, CAC/LTV, Payback).
- Fractional consulting background with 2-3 relevant client references.
Engagement & Compensation
- Contract (1099) with hourly or monthly retainer; scope-based (share your rate range).
- Flex up during fundraising or major launches.
- Opportunity to grow into a full-time finance leadership role as we scale.
