About Us
We’re building an AI-assisted ESL learning platform that combines explicit, rule-based grammar analysis with modern AI to help learners better understand and apply English.
We’re an early-stage, self-funded company with an opinionated approach and a founder who has over 10 years of experience as an IT PM (PMI cert.), teaching English overseas, and developing the underlying language methodology and syntax mapping.
About the Work
We need technical leadership to guide the build of our ESL learning platform from the ground up. We're looking for a fractional CTO to define our technology approach, oversee external development, and ensure smooth delivery.
Specifically, you'll:
- Determine the right tech stack
- Define and document the overall system architecture across backend, frontend, and AI integrations
- This includes ensuring that the detailed grammar specification is supported by the engineering and architectural design with a technical implementation plan

- Oversee the engineering team
- An external agency to build the web app and LMS
- 1 - 2 engineers focused on our core backend and AI integrations
- Set engineering standards, processes, and documentation
- Lead the technical interview process for hiring the above 1 - 2 engineers
NOTE: We may need 10 - 20 hrs / week to start, that then tapers down to 5 - 10 hrs over time.
About You
You MUST have:
- Been a CTO or senior technical leader, overseeing delivery, for other early-stage tech startups
- Specific experience shipping MVPs, the more the better
- Great project management skills in a delivery-focused role, orchestrating the team, setting technical standards and ensuring they are met, and thatdeliverables ship on time
- Integrated AI components (e.g., LLMs, AI APIs) into production applications
- Comfortable building an AI product around a symbolic, deterministic language system, rather than relying only on end-to-end LLM or neural-only approaches
- Can be based anywhere in the world, but must offer at least 2 hours of overlap with GMT+5:45 (Nepal time, where the founder is currently based)
Some nice-to-haves:
- Language learning, language translation, and other consumer edtech product experience
- Comfortable jumping in hands-on when needed, even if not the primary builder
