We're seeking a strategic yet hands-on Fractional VP of Finance to oversee the financial operations of two growing businesses: Hawthorn Creative, a boutique marketing agency and a newly launched event venue in Portsmouth, NH, The Hawthorn (combined revenue ~$3.5M). Reporting directly to the CEO, you’ll be a key member of the executive team, helping guide overall business strategy while managing financial systems, reporting, and planning.
This role is fully remote and ideal for a seasoned finance leader who thrives in entrepreneurial environments and is looking for meaningful, flexible work. We estimate 25–30 hours/week with some flexibility in schedule—perfect for someone who values both challenge and balance. Responsibilities
- Develop and execute the company's financial strategy, ensuring alignment with overall business objectives.
- Oversee all aspects of financial reporting, including the preparation of accurate and timely financial statements (balance sheets, income statements, cash flow statements).
- Manage and optimize cash flow, ensuring sufficient liquidity to meet operational and strategic needs.
- Serve as the plan sponsor and administrator for the company’s 401(k) plan, in coordination with our 3(38) investment fiduciary and investment monitoring service.
- Develop and monitor budgets, forecasts, and financial performance metrics, providing insightful analysis and recommendations to the leadership team.
- Implement and maintain strong internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure compliance with all relevant regulations.
- Manage relationships with banks, accountants, insurance providers, lawyers, etc.
- Oversee payroll, accounts payable, and accounts receivable functions.
- Analyze financial data to identify trends, opportunities, and potential risks, providing proactive solutions.
- Contribute to strategic planning initiatives, including evaluating potential investments and growth opportunities.
- Ensure compliance with tax regulations and manage tax planning strategies.
- Potentially manage human resources and administrative functions, depending on the candidate's experience and the company's needs.
- Provide financial insights and support to department heads to improve decision-making.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. MBA or relevant advanced degree preferred.
- 5-7+ years of progressive experience in financial management, with at least 3+ years in a more senior financial role.
- Proven experience in developing and implementing financial strategies that support business growth.
- Strong understanding of GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles)
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Proficiency in accounting software and financial management systems (e.g., QuickBooks).
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Google sheets and other data analysis tools.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively present financial information to both financial and non-financial audiences.
- Experience in a small to medium-sized business environment is highly desirable.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- High level of integrity and ethical standards.
