About Sortly
Sortly is a ~100-person B2B SaaS company building inventory management software that small and mid-sized businesses actually enjoy using. Our customers run field services, construction, trades, and operations teams who need to know what they have, where it is, and what it costs.
We're bootstrapped and profitable, seeking an individual who is passionate about ensuring our books are clean, and our month’s end is smooth. That's where you come in.
We work by our RISE values, and we care as much about how we get results as the results themselves.
The role
We're hiring a Fractional Controller to own Sortly's accounting operations and build the controls, close process, and reporting a scaling SaaS company needs. This is a hands-on, part-time seat: you'll do the work, not just advise on it.
You'll be the steward of our books and the person who makes our financial data reliable, timely, and audit-ready. You'll partner closely with leadership on how we measure the business, and you'll leave behind systems and documentation that make finance scalable whether this seat stays fractional or eventually becomes full-time.
This is not an FP&A or CFO role. Forecasting, fundraising, and board strategy sit elsewhere; your job is to make sure the numbers underneath all of it are right.
What you'll own
Month-end close and accounting operations
- Own the financial budgeting process and share final budgets with stakeholders across the business.
- Own the monthly close end to end, with a target of closing within 10 business days and tightening from there
- Prepare and review journal entries, accruals, prepaids, and balance sheet reconciliations
- Oversee AP, AR, billing, and collections workflows, whether handled in-house or by an outsourced bookkeeper
SaaS revenue and reporting
- Ensure revenue recognition is ASC 606 compliant across subscription, annual, and multi-year contracts
- Produce accurate monthly financial statements (P&L, balance sheet, cash flow) for leadership
- Reconcile SaaS metrics (ARR, MRR, churn, deferred revenue) between billing systems and the GL so there is one version of the truth
Controls, compliance, and audit readiness
- Design and document internal controls proportionate to our size, including approval flows and segregation of duties
- Prepare for and manage annual audit or review, and coordinate with external tax advisors on filings, sales tax, and 1099s
- Support payroll accuracy, equity accounting, and expense policy compliance in partnership with the People Team
Systems and scalability
- Evaluate and optimize our finance tech stack (GL, billing, spend management, payroll integrations)
- Build the close checklist, chart of accounts hygiene, and process documentation that will outlast your engagement
- Advise leadership on when and how to build out the in-house finance function
India operations and consolidation
- Coordinate the India close with local teams and providers; own consolidated reporting, including US GAAP adjustments, intercompany reconciliations, eliminations, and foreign currency translation.
- Review intercompany charges and settlements, supporting cost-plus arrangements and transfer pricing documentation with tax advisers.
- Coordinate India payroll review and funding with local teams and People Operations, maintaining clear deadlines, approvals, and backup coverage.
Tax and audit coordination
- Coordinate corporate income tax, sales tax, and other applicable filings with external advisers; maintain a calendar of US and India filing and payment deadlines.
Team guidance and process improvement
- Guide accounting staff through clear expectations, work review, coaching, and constructive feedback.
- Improve accounting systems and integrations; use automation and appropriate AI tools to reduce manual work while maintaining data confidentiality and effective review controls.
Budget and forecasting support
- Provide reliable actuals, accounting assumptions, and explanations of variances to support budgets, forecasts, and management reporting.
- Partner with finance leadership or the designated FP&A owner, who leads the company budget, forecast, and financial planning process.
Your first 90 days
Success in the first quarter means leadership trusts the numbers and the close runs on a calendar, not on heroics.
What good looks like
Day 30
You've assessed the books, close process, and systems, and shared a prioritized findings memo with clear fixes
Day 60
A documented close checklist is in use, key reconciliations are current, and revenue recognition gaps are identified with a remediation plan
Day 90
Close runs within the target window, monthly financials go to leadership on a set date, and a controls framework is documented and live
What you bring
Must-haves
- 10+ years in accounting, including at least 3 in a Controller or Assistant Controller role
- Direct experience as controller at a B2B SaaS company, ideally in the $10M–$50M ARR range. Services or agency-only backgrounds won't be a fit
- Deep, hands-on command of ASC 606 for subscription revenue, deferred revenue, and SaaS metrics
- A track record of building or rebuilding a close process and internal controls from an early-stage baseline
- Strong US GAAP knowledge and experience leading an audit or review
- Comfort being hands-on in the GL; you'll do the work, not only review it
How you work
You're precise without being rigid. You explain financial concepts clearly to non-finance leaders, flag issues early, and document as you go so the next person inherits clarity, not chaos.
Nice-to-haves
- CPA (active or inactive)
- Experience with QuickBooks Online or NetSuite, plus billing tools like Stripe, Chargebee, or Maxio
- Experience supporting a company with a distributed or international team (India experience preferred)
- Prior fractional or multi-client experience, with the discipline to deliver on a part-time cadence
Engagement details
Commitment
20-30 hours/week, with heavier involvement during close and audit windows
Initial term
3 months, with option to extend or convert
Reports to
Founder & CEO
Location
Remote, US-based; availability during US business hours for close
Compensation
Monthly flat retainer preferred
