Software Architect

Role Description

PepTech is seeking a Fractional Software Architect & Code Reviewer to serve as an independent technical advisor. This part-time (5–10 hrs/week) role is for a senior-level, hands-on software architect who can perform deep code reviews, validate architecture decisions, and ensure our technical foundation supports both MVP execution and long-term scalability. The architect will work directly with the founder and collaborate with outsourced development teams.

Responsibilities

• Conduct in-depth code reviews for maintainability, security, and scalability.
• Validate backend architecture, including database schemas and API design.
• Ensure performant features (e.g., sub-2s structure search for 50k+ compounds).
• Provide architectural input on future features like bulk workflows, dynamic pricing, and vendor scoring.
• Identify technical debt and scalability risks early.
• Provide clear, actionable reporting directly to the founder.

Requirements

• 10+ years of backend/software architecture experience.
• Expertise in Node.js, TypeScript, PostgreSQL, and Python (with RDKit preferred).
• Familiar with AWS environments and modern CI/CD pipelines.
• Strong track record of detailed code reviews and architecture evaluations.
• Familiarity with Auth0 and JWT-based authentication.
• Experience with SaaS, marketplaces, or chemical/scientific data systems is a major plus.
• Prior experience working with or auditing outsourced dev teams or working as a fractional CTO/architect is highly desirable.
