Job Title: Fractional Finance Director (Venture-Backed MedTech)

Salary: £650-£900 per day dependant on experience

Term of Appointment: Fractional/ Part-time – approximately 1-3 days per week.

Location: London/Hybrid

Reporting: CEO & Board

Key Working Relationships (Internal): CEO, Board, Company Secretary/Financial Controller, Head of R&D and wider management team

Key Working Relationships (External): Accountants, auditors, investors, grant bodies, banks, tax advisers, legal advisers and other professional advisers

Overall Responsibility: Taking hands-on ownership of the Company's financial management, planning, forecasting and reporting, providing the CEO and Board with clear financial visibility as the business progresses from venture-backed R&D towards product commercialisation and revenue generation.

Job Purpose

The Fractional Finance Director will take ownership of the Company's financial planning, management reporting and financial control, working closely with the CEO and Board as SSA progresses through its next stage of growth.

This is a hands-on fractional executive role, rather than an advisory appointment. The successful candidate will be expected to personally understand, maintain and challenge the Company's financial model, cash position, forecasts and underlying assumptions.

The immediate priority will be to establish clear and reliable financial visibility across the business: where capital is being deployed, current and forecast cash runway, future funding requirements, project expenditure and the financial implications of key strategic decisions.

The Finance Director will also support the CEO and Board through future fundraising and institutional due diligence and help prepare the Company's financial infrastructure for the transition from pre-revenue development into manufacturing, commercialisation and revenue generation.

Qualifications

Applicants must have the right to work in the UK and should demonstrate the following attributes.

• Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent).
• Previous experience operating as a Finance Director, CFO or senior financial leader.
• Significant experience within venture-backed, private-equity-backed or high-growth businesses.
• Strong financial modelling, forecasting and scenario-planning capability.
• Demonstrable experience managing cash and runway within an early-stage or growth company.
• Experience producing management accounts, budgets and Board-level financial reporting.
• Strong understanding of UK accounting, tax and statutory reporting requirements.
• Experience supporting equity fundraising and investor due diligence.
• Advanced Excel and financial modelling capability.
• Strong commercial judgement and ability to challenge assumptions constructively.
• Comfortable working personally with detailed financial information rather than delegating all financial analysis.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate financial matters clearly to investors, Board members and non-financial colleagues.

Desirable Skills and Abilities

• Previous Finance Director or CFO experience within medical devices, life sciences, biotech, deep-tech or another R&D-intensive technology business.
• Experience taking a venture-backed company from pre-revenue development into commercialisation.
• Experience supporting institutional venture capital fundraising.
• Experience with Innovate UK or other grant-funded programmes.
• Knowledge of R&D tax credits and EIS.
• Experience using Xero or equivalent cloud accounting systems.
• Experience developing product COGS, gross-margin and manufacturing models.
• Experience with debt, venture debt or innovation loan facilities.
• Experience with international commercialisation, distribution or overseas operations.
• Exposure to M&A, licensing, product divestment or other liquidity events would be advantageous.

Personality

Commercially minded, highly numerate and exceptionally well organised, with a strong sense of ownership and attention to detail. Pragmatic and comfortable operating in a fast-moving entrepreneurial environment where priorities and assumptions can change rapidly.

The successful candidate will be confident working directly with the CEO and Board and capable of challenging assumptions constructively while providing clear, concise and actionable financial advice.

Above all, we are looking for someone who enjoys being close to the business and its decision-making. This role will suit an experienced Finance Director who is comfortable moving between detailed financial modelling, management reporting, investor discussions and strategic Board-level decision-making.

Personal Situation

Available to commit approximately 1–3 days per week initially, with sufficient flexibility to provide additional support during fundraising, due diligence, budgeting and other periods of increased activity. Able to attend the Company's London and R&D facilities and key Board, investor and adviser meetings where required.

Management Ability

This is initially a hands-on position within a lean finance structure rather than a large-team management role. The successful candidate should nevertheless have the experience and capability to design, develop and ultimately lead an appropriate finance function as the Company progresses through commercialisation and growth.
