Fractional Finance Director - AFM Investment Group Ltd
Commitment: Part-time / fractional, starting with 2.5 days a week with the expectation of moving into a full-time permanent role in the future.
Location: Hybrid — remote working plus initally on-site presence at one of our portfolio companies near Heathrow one day a week.
Remuneration: Starting at £500 a day with the expectation to increase substantially to a FT salary, including bonus, benefits & equity options.

About AFM Investment Group
AFM Investment Group was founded by Jonnie and Lorena Armitage in 2020 with a simple philosophy: to buy great businesses from great people and help their legacy continue to thrive.
We take a long-term, hands-on and human approach to investment. We support leadership teams, strengthen the foundations already in place, and help unlock sustainable growth.
Our focus is on profitable, well-run businesses in the manufacturing and logistics sectors.
Our current portfolio includes four businesses located in Dorset, Portsmouth, Heathrow and Glasgow. We are now looking to expand the portfolio further, with a target of four additional acquisitions over the next 12 months.

The Opportunity
We are looking for a hands-on, commercially minded Fractional Finance Director to strengthen financial visibility, control and decision-making across the group.
This is primarily a group-level role supporting AFM and its growing portfolio. It will also include a meaningful supporting workstream at one of our portfolio companies, Guest Express Transport Ltd, based near Heathrow.
At AFM, the role will cover group-level reporting, portfolio consolidation, financial support for new acquisitions, group cash visibility, funding support and commercial decision-making.
At Guest Express, the focus will be on improving cash flow forecasting, working capital visibility, divisional reporting, profitability analysis, cost control, fleet investment decisions and management information.
This is not a statutory reporting role.
We are not looking for someone focused mainly on year-end accounts, tax filings or compliance. We need a finance leader who can get under the skin of the business, improve the quality of financial information available to management, and support sharper commercial decisions.
The right person will be commercially strong, hands-on, comfortable challenging the numbers, and able to help build a better finance function over time.
We see this as the start of a longer-term relationship. The role will begin on a fractional, part-time basis, with the expectation that in time it will move into a full-time permanent position as the portfolio grows.

Key Responsibilities
AFM Group Level
- Prepare monthly management accounts and consolidated reporting across the portfolio
- Build clear group-level reporting for monthly board meetings
- Develop consistent reporting standards across portfolio companies
- Create dashboards and reporting tools that give leadership better financial visibility
- Support VAT, Corporation Tax and Confirmation Statement processes by liaising with external accountants
- Support the assessment of acquisition targets
- Review financial information and help build and challenge acquisition models
- Assist with financial due diligence and translate findings into clear commercial implications
- Support the integration of newly acquired businesses into group reporting and finance processes
- Help maintain relationships with lenders and funding partners
- Monitor cash positions and working capital across portfolio companies
- Identify pressure points, risks and opportunities across the group
- Translate financial information into clear, practical insight for non-finance stakeholders
Guest Express Supporting Workstream
- Own and improve short and medium-term cash flow forecasting
- Monitor working capital and identify cash pressure points
- Improve visibility around profitability across the business
- Help develop clearer divisional reporting across scanning, logistics, transport and fleet operations
- Build reporting that allows management to understand profitability by vehicle, route and activity
- Review the P&L and overhead base
- Identify anomalies, inefficiencies and areas of overspend
- Challenge spend across key areas including insurance, procurement and major cost lines
- Review return on investment for capital expenditure, particularly around fleet and vehicles
- Support management with better financial information and clearer decision-making

Team and Systems
There are two people within the existing Guest Express finance team who will report directly into this role.
The successful candidate should be comfortable managing, directing and developing both individuals. A key part of the role is to build capability within the existing finance team, not simply do the work personally.
We are also looking for someone who is strong with Xero. Ideally, the successful candidate will be a confident Xero user who can improve how the system is used, train the team, and build better reporting processes from the existing platform.

- Able to operate both strategically and practically

- Xero experience preferred
- Able to challenge, investigate and improve rather than simply report
- Experience managing and developing a small finance team
- Comfortable working across multiple entities
- Experience with group or consolidated reporting
- Ability to utilise AI and automation to accelerate process & make them more efficient
Desirable:
- Experience in logistics, transport, fleet-heavy or operational businesses

Why Join Us
This is an opportunity to join a growing investment group at an exciting stage.
The role will suit someone who enjoys variety, wants to work closely with business owners and leadership teams, and is interested in helping build a stronger finance function across a growing group of companies.
We are looking for someone who can add real value commercially, not just produce reports. The salary, benefits and bonus for this role are expected to grow substantially as the group grows, as well as having future equity options.
