About Us & The Role

We are seeking a fractional CTO to work part-time, long-term, for our SaaS company. We are in the proxy and data scraping space. You can see our website at rayobyte.com. This job description may be more specific than most, but we value transparency and want to give you the opportunity to review our exact needs. As a bootstrapped company that has been around for 8 years, we’ve grown as most companies do in this situation:  organically, and doing the best we can with the resources we have.

What has resulted is that after 8 years, our cash cow product (DC / Data Center Proxies) had code piled on top of it, leading to a massive legacy spaghetti code mess. It was intentional, and we knew the dangers, and now it’s time to refactor and modernize ourselves for the next 8 years ahead!

The first major project we will seek your leadership on is to modernize our product portfolio. It’s important that we note here: although this is the first and main priority, we are seeking a CTO leader that can guide us among many facets of our technology in our company. We are NOT seeking a ‘Team Lead' for this project only, but rather a leader who can help us succeed on this difficult project, as well as provide value beyond that.

This project’s modernization can be summed up like this:

The end goal would be:

All products are under the same architecture, the same user interfaces, the same billing systems, and so forth. The customers will have a cohesive experience.

We’re Seeking Someone Who

• Has been the tech leader in a SaaS company
• Has been a leader in a startup
• Can work with us part-time (1-10 hours/week), long-term (1+ year)
• Isn’t afraid to “get into the code”. You may not be writing code, but we are seeking someone who isn’t afraid to get their hands dirty with things like code reviews.
  • Language requirements: Our projects are split between PHP and Node.js. You should be familiar enough with these languages to have detailed conversations with our developers during this modernization project.
• Has architecture experience, such as: diagrams, database ERDs, etc. You may be doing the architecture work for this project.
