The Part-Time CFO / Director of Fractional Services serves as CAVALRY's senior financial leader in a strategic 20-hour per week capacity, leveraging efficient systems, automation, and streamlined processes to ensure financial health while building and managing our external Fractional Services division. This role requires someone who can work independently and efficiently, managing both internal financial operations and launching a revenue-generating fractional CFO and accounting services practice for nonprofit and mission-driven clients. Success in this position depends on strong systems thinking, process optimization, and the ability to maximize impact within a part-time schedule.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Provide strategic financial leadership to CAVALRY's executive team and Board of Directors, including annual budgeting, forecasting, long-term planning, and presenting financial performance, trends, and recommendations
- Establish and maintain efficient financial systems, internal controls, policies, and automated processes that ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, GAAP, and regulatory requirements while minimizing manual work
- Oversee streamlined accounting operations for CAVALRY, leveraging automation tools and efficient workflows for accounts payable, accounts receivable, reconciliations, and monthly financial close processes
- Plan, launch, and manage CAVALRY's Fractional Services practice from concept to full operation, developing service offerings, pricing models, delivery frameworks, and scalable systems that can be replicated for clients
- Drive business development for Fractional Services through strategic market identification, client acquisition, networking, proposals, and building partnerships within the nonprofit and mission-driven sectors
- Develop standardized processes, templates, and toolkits for Fractional Services delivery that enable efficient service provision and future team scalability
- Manage client relationships for Fractional Services while monitoring division profitability, growth targets, and creating marketing materials and thought leadership content
- Lead audit preparation and serve as primary liaison with external auditors, maintaining organized digital documentation systems and efficient records management
- Generate monthly financial reports for leadership review, ensuring accurate tracking of grants, restricted funds, and program expenses through well-maintained chart of accounts and reporting systems
- Assess and manage financial risks, cash flow, and resource allocation while driving strategic decision-making through financial analysis and modeling
Requirements & Skills
- 5–7 years of progressive accounting and financial management experience with strong understanding of nonprofit accounting, fund accounting, GAAP, and compliance requirements, with demonstrated ability to work efficiently and independently
- Proven expertise in building and optimizing financial systems, automation, and streamlined processes that maximize accuracy while minimizing time investment
- Experience launching or managing professional services offerings with strong business development skills and entrepreneurial mindset
- Expertise in financial planning, analysis, strategic decision support, budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting with ability to synthesize complex information quickly
- Excellent presentation and communication skills for engaging with Board members, executive leadership, clients, and stakeholders in a part-time capacity
- Advanced proficiency with QuickBooks Online and cloud-based accounting platforms, expert-level Excel skills, and experience implementing automation tools, workflow systems, and integrated software solutions
- Strategic thinker with strong process improvement orientation, ability to identify inefficiencies, and implement solutions that reduce manual workload
- Exceptional organizational skills with ability to prioritize ruthlessly, manage multiple responsibilities within limited hours, and maintain high standards for accuracy and compliance
- Self-directed and highly efficient with proven ability to accomplish significant results in part-time or fractional roles
- Strong interpersonal skills, ability to build trusted relationships quickly, and commitment to CAVALRY's mission and values
Educational Requirement
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field (required)
- CPA, MBA, or relevant advanced certification strongly preferred
