About CAIS:
The Center for AI Safety (CAIS) is a nonprofit organization focused on reducing societal-scale risks from artificial intelligence through research, field-building, and public engagement. As CAIS continues to grow, we are incubating and spinning out new initiatives that require strong operational foundations to succeed independently.
The Role:
We’re looking for a Senior Business Operations professional to help stand up and operationalize new organizations and initiatives spinning out of CAIS. This is a hands-on, high-ownership role focused on building the business and operational infrastructure required for early-stage organizations to function effectively.
The work will be project-based and spiky—periods of intense setup followed by lighter maintenance—making this a strong fit for an experienced operator who thrives in ambiguity and can move quickly from assessment to execution.
What You’ll Do:
- Lead operational setup for new organizations and initiatives spinning out of CAIS
- Own and coordinate core business operations, including:
- Legal entity formation and structure
- Information security and compliance setup\
- Finance and administrative infrastructure
- Vendor and external partner management (e.g., legal counsel, consultants)
- Assess the current state of incubated projects and identify operational gaps
- Design and implement systems, processes, and structures that enable teams to operate independently
- Coordinate across internal stakeholders and external partners to drive progress
- Support ongoing operational needs post–spin-out as required
What We’re Looking For:
- 5+ years of experience in business operations, strategy & operations, or organizational setup roles
- Demonstrated experience:
- Standing up new organizations, entities, or major initiatives
- Managing legal, finance, and compliance workflows (directly or via vendors)
- Operating with high autonomy in early-stage or ambiguous environments
- Strong judgment and ability to prioritize under shifting demands
- Comfortable owning work end-to-end without heavy process or tooling
- Experience working with nonprofits, research orgs, or mission-driven organizations is a plus
Nice to Have:
Experience with nonprofit incorporation or governance
Prior work in policy, research, or public-interest organizations
Background supporting multi-entity or multi-program organizations
Working Model:
- Hybrid preferred for candidates local to San Francisco
- Remote candidates are welcome, with reasonable overlap with Pacific Time
- Hours may scale up or down depending on project phase
Why This Role
You’ll play a critical role in helping important AI safety initiatives move from concept to reality—setting them up with the operational foundations they need to succeed long-term.
