We’re Denizen. We’re an architecture + engineering firm that believes good work starts with good relationships. That’s not a tagline — it’s how we actually operate day to day.
We’ve built a strong business and continue to grow. With that growth, we’re now looking for a part-time Controller to help bring greater clarity and structure to the financial side of the business — while keeping things practical and efficient.

Current State
Right now, our finance function works — but it lives in too many places and in too many people’s heads. We’re at the point where we need:
- Clean, consistent monthly reporting
- Predictable cash flow visibility
- Invoicing, AR, and AP that evolve alongside the business
We’re still building systems. If you’re looking for a perfectly polished finance operation, this isn’t that. If you’re energized by building one, we’d like to hear from you.

How You’ll Contribute
This is a hands-on, part-time role. You’ll be expected to:
- Lead the monthly close process and deliver timely, meaningful financial reporting
- Develop clear, practical reporting that helps leaders understand performance and make informed decisions
- Strengthen cash flow forecasting and provide visibility into future financial needs
- Manage billing, accounts receivable, accounts payable, and day-to-day financial operations
- Build scalable, repeatable processes and systems that support continued growth — automating where it makes sense
- Identify and act on opportunities to improve financial systems, controls, and workflows
- Partner with leadership to provide the financial insights that inform strategic decisions
- Bring a modern finance mindset, with an eye toward automation, innovation, and continuous improvement
Even at part-time capacity, this is a meaningful role. You’re here to strengthen the financial foundation of the business, provide real insights, and support smart decision-making as we grow — not just to keep the books.

How This Role Works
We’re intentionally flexible:
- Hours: Part-time (2–3 days/week), outcomes-based
- Structure: Open to employee or independent contractor arrangement
- Location: Preference for Calgary-area candidates for permanent roles; Kimberley access also considered
- In-person: We value face-to-face time for key meetings and business needs — otherwise, work in a way that works for you

Who This Is a Good Fit For
You probably have:
- A Quickbooks online expert
- Relevant experience in a Controller, Senior Bookkeeper, or Fractional Finance Lead capacity
- A bias toward progress over perfection
- The ability to move between detail and big picture
- Comfort operating in a growing, evolving business environment
- A communication style that translates numbers into language that resonates with non-finance colleagues
- A disposition toward building order and structure without overcomplicating things
Bonus points if you:
- Have experience with project-based or professional services firms — construction or architecture/engineering background is a plus
- Have set up or rebuilt financial systems before
- Aware of and very familiar with the new generation of business tools and AI implementations
- Enjoy leaving things better than you found them

Who This Is Not For
- Someone looking for a narrowly defined, low-ownership bookkeeping role
- Someone who needs everything perfectly structured before getting started
- Someone looking for full-time hours right now

Why Denizen
- You’ll work alongside talented architects, engineers, and support professionals who genuinely enjoy collaborating
- We don’t do internal politics — we solve problems directly
- We’re serious about work-life balance, including a shorter Friday schedule
- You’ll have real influence on how the business runs, not just report on it

Compensation
We’re open-minded on both structure and compensation. The right package will depend on experience, scope, and whether the role is structured as an employee or contractor engagement. We believe in paying fairly for the value someone brings.
