The Fractional Chief Financial Officer (CFO) provides hands-on leadership and oversight of all financial, accounting, compliance, and reporting functions for a growing nonprofit organization with annual revenues of $4–$6 million.
This role is both strategic and highly operational. The CFO is responsible for building, strengthening, and managing the organization’s financial infrastructure, ensuring clear and accurate accounting, grant compliance, strong internal controls, and clear financial reporting to leadership and the Board of Directors.
A primary priority for this role is the implementation, and optimization of a nonprofit accounting software system and the development of efficient financial processes that support long-term organizational sustainability.
The CFO serves as a key member of the Executive Leadership Team and as the primary financial liaison to the Board Finance Committee.
General Accountabilities:
Financial Infrastructure & Systems Leadership (Priority Responsibility)
- Design and document financial workflows, policies, and internal controls
- Establish best practices for fund accounting, grant tracking, and reporting
- Train staff in new systems and financial processes
- Improve financial efficiency, reporting clarity, and audit readiness
Accounting & Financial Operations (Hands-On)
- Oversee and actively support daily accounting operations, including AP, AR, payroll, general ledger, and reconciliations
- Supervise and mentor the Staff Accountant
- Ensure accurate classification of restricted and unrestricted funds
- Maintain clean, audit-ready books at all times
- Manage cash flow, reserves, and financial sustainability
Budgeting, Forecasting & Reporting
- Lead annual organizational budgeting process with department leaders
- Provide monthly budget-to-actual reporting and cash flow projections
- Develop financial forecasts and scenario planning for leadership and Board use
- Translate financial data into clear, actionable information for non-financial leaders
Job Qualifications:
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field
- Minimum 7 years of progressive accounting/financial leadership experience
- Strong experience in nonprofit fund accounting and grant compliance
- Demonstrated experience implementing or significantly upgrading an accounting system
- Experience working in lean organizations where the CFO is hands-on in daily accounting operations
- Deep understanding of internal controls and audit preparation
Preferred
- CPA designation
- Experience working with nonprofit boards and finance committees
- Experience supervising small accounting teams and developing staff capability

Physical Demands

- Mobility: The role may involve the ability to move freely within the facility to conduct interviews, attend meetings, and other office duties.
- Sensory Abilities: This position may require the ability to perceive and respond to environmental and situational factors that are relevant to patient interactions.
