POSITION SUMMARY
The Fractional Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) will serve as a strategic HR executive partner to the leadership team, providing high‑impact human capital leadership aligned with the company’s growth stage and business objectives. This role is ideal for an experienced biotech HR leader who can drive people strategy, implement best‑in‑class HR practices, and lead critical HR initiatives without the need for a full‑time executive presence.
The Fractional CHRO will balance strategic guidance with pragmatic execution, supporting the organization as it scales, advances scientific programs, and prepares for key inflection points such as funding rounds, clinical milestones, or commercialization.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategic Leadership & Advisory
- Partner with executive leadership to develop and execute a people strategy aligned with business and scientific priorities
- Advise on organizational design, workforce planning, and leadership structure appropriate for the company’s stage (pre‑clinical, clinical, commercial)
- Serve as a thought partner to the leadership team on talent, culture, and change management topics
- Support board‑level discussions on human capital strategy, readiness, and risk
Talent & Organizational Development
- Guide workforce planning, succession planning, and leadership development initiatives
- Advise on hiring strategy for critical scientific, technical, and commercial roles
- Establish scalable approaches to onboarding, performance management, and career development
- Support executive coaching and leadership team effectiveness
HR Best Practices & Infrastructure
- Design, optimize, or assess HR policies, programs, and processes to ensure compliance, scalability, and efficiency
- Implement best practices across compensation, benefits, performance management, and employee relations
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws, including biotech‑specific considerations
Total Rewards & Compensation Strategy
- Develop and refine compensation and equity strategies aligned with market benchmarks and investor expectations
- Advise on incentive programs, bonus structures, and equity plans suited to biotech growth stages
- Support job architecture, leveling frameworks, and internal equity reviews
Culture, Engagement & Change Management
- Shape and reinforce company culture aligned with mission, values, and scientific rigor
- Lead or support employee engagement and retention initiatives
- Provide guidance during periods of rapid change, growth, or organizational transformation
- Support diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) initiatives appropriate to the organization’s maturity
Special Projects & Initiatives
- Lead or advise on key HR initiatives such as:
- Commercialization preparation
- Rapid scaling or restructuring
- Provide hands‑on project leadership as needed, while empowering internal HR resources
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 15+ years of progressive HR leadership experience, including experience as a CHRO or senior HR leader
- Prior experience as an HR leader in a Fortune 500 Biotech/Pharma company
- Proven ability to operate effectively in early‑stage and growth‑stage organizations
- Strong knowledge of employment law, compensation, performance management, and organizational development
- Experience partnering with executive teams, boards, and investors
- Ability to balance strategic thinking with practical, execution‑oriented leadership
