Role Description
The KCNQ2 Cure Alliance (KCA) is seeking a dynamic and highly motivated Chief Science Officer to lead our research efforts aimed at accelerating discoveries in KCNQ2-related disorders. This is a unique opportunity to play a pivotal role in shaping and executing our research strategy, driving innovative programs, and making a real impact on the lives of those affected by KCNQ2-RD. As CSO, you will lead and oversee KCA’s multi-faceted research programs, fostering collaborations between academia, industry, and the patient community. You’ll play a critical role in developing and implementing the research-related objectives of KCA’s Research Strategic Plan, spanning therapeutic modalities such as drug repurposing, small molecules, gene therapies, and more. You will also provide scientific oversight for our research grant programs and lead the development of innovative tools to de-risk drug development for KCNQ2. This position requires a strategic thinker who can design and implement high-level scientific projects while effectively communicating research progress to all stakeholders, including families affected by KCNQ2-RD.
Responsibilities
- Lead Research Strategy: Develop and update KCA’s Research Roadmap and Strategic Plan, spearheading innovative programs to advance KCNQ2 research.
- Foster Industry and Academic Partnerships: Collaborate with science advisors, biotech leaders, and nonprofit organizations to drive new research opportunities and secure industry funding for key projects.
- Communicate Advancements: Present research updates to the board, host roundtables, and webinars, and communicate with families and stakeholders to share scientific progress and participation opportunities.
- Grant Management: Oversee KCA’s research grant programs from pre-award to post-award, developing strategies to improve grant administration and support promising treatment approaches.
- Clinical Trial Readiness: Drive the development of tools, such as clinical endpoints, to facilitate future clinical trials and drug development efforts.
Who We’re Looking For
We’re seeking a candidate with a strong background in genetics, neuroscience, or biomedical sciences, preferably with experience in rare neurological diseases like epilepsy. You should have excellent communication skills, a proven ability to manage complex projects, and a deep passion for translational research. Experience in clinical trials, drug development, or working in the nonprofit sector is a plus!
Qualifications
- PhD in biological sciences, neuroscience, or genetics (or equivalent experience)
- 2-5 years of post-graduate experience leading scientific research projects
- Experience with clinical studies, translational research, or drug development
- Proven track record of securing grants and funding
- Ability to travel for meetings and events as needed
